Monthly meeting @ Fairview Community Center
Nov 7 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Speaker: Robert Gehrz – Professor (Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics)

Topic: Stellar Evolution after life on the Main Sequence: Observational studies of Aging Stars

After exhausting their hydrogen fuel during Main Sequence burning, low and high mass stars evolve in distinctly different paths that lead to planetary nebulae and supernova explosions.  These paths will be briefly reviewed and selected related optical/infrared observations of aging stars by University of Minnesota Astronomer will be described.

Monthly meetings are open to all – you needn’t be an MAS member to attend. These meetings normally take place the first Thursday of each month at the Fairview Community Center in Roseville (“Great Room”). Monthly meetings start at 7:00 p.m. and last about two hours.

Each meeting features Board member introductions, general announcements, “Better Know a Constellation”, normally presented by a member, main speaker (around 45 minutes duration) and an after-meeting social gathering. Society business is occasionally transacted as needed.

NOTE: Meeting time and / or location sometimes change to take advantage of special program opportunities. Please check the MAS homepage at www.mnastro.org for the latest information regarding the meeting.

2019 Special Event – Transit of Mercury @ Eagle Lake Observatory
Nov 11 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
2019 Special Event - Transit of Mercury @ Eagle Lake Observatory | Norwood Young America | Minnesota | United States

On Monday November 11th, 2019 we will be having a special event for viewing the transit of Mercury across the Sun.  The observatory opens at 8:00 am with the transit beginning before sunrise.  By 8:00 am the sun should have risen enough for viewing to begin.  There will be plenty of time to view the transit as Mercury makes its way across the sun.  The transit ends at 1:39 pm.

This star party is a ”Cancelled if Cloudy” event. Be sure to check the MAS home page and/or the MAS Discussion Forums for the latest updates if the sky looks questionable for viewing.

The next Mercury transit visible from Minnesota will not be until May 2049
