The following information is provided so keyholders can access the observatory's data network and computers using their personal laptops, either by cable connection to the router or via the wireless network at the observatory. The following diagram provides an overview of the data network and computer configuration. Details can be found in the sections following:

The ID and password for changing the configuration of the LinkSys WRT45G wireless router is "onan / onan". Keyholders should not change the configuration of the router except to restore functionality in an emergency situation. Any other changes to the router must have the prior approval of the observatory's 'computer wrangler'.

[edit] COM port assignments on OnanServer

The 'OnanServer' laptop can also serve as a controller for the SBIG STV Video Camera and Autoguider and the Meade LX200GPS telescope. It has a four port serial adapter attached to its USB port for these purposes. The port assignments are:

PORT USE
COM3 SBIG STV
COM5 Meade LX200GPS
COM6 open
COM7 open

Keyholders may want to use their personal laptop computers and software to control the Meade LX200GPS or the SBIG STV camera. The four port serial adapter can be connected to an available USB port for this purpose, though drivers will have to be installed to enable it. The necessary driver files are stored on 'OnanServer' at 'c:\Archives\USBGear\' as well as on a CD-ROM in the library. Note that the COM port assignments for a keyholder laptop may differ from those documented above. Keyholders must reconnect the four port serial adapter to 'OnanServer' after they are through using it.

[edit] Storing keyholder files on OnanServer

There is a directory on the server where keyholders can create folders to store their files--'c:\Data'. Keyholders should create a folder under this directory using their last name as the sub-folder name for storage of their files. These directories are not secured. Keyholders are on the 'honor system' as far as accessing or altering the files of other keyholders.
