[edit] Overview
The observatory uses a permanently installed Optoma DX607 multimedia projector to display video from DVDs, the imaging mount's cameras and laptop computers.
[edit] Connections
The projector's composite video input is permanently connected to the observatory's video distribution system and is accessed as 'Monitor 3'. (See Video Distribution documentation for detailed operating instructions.)
A VGA cable is permanently attached to the VGA input of the projector for connecting laptop computers. Set laptop screen resolution to 800x600 pixels for proper operation.
(There will be very slight 'bleeding' of the image into the black border of the screen, and various 'keystoning' effects when projecting the laptop output, but this is normal given the phycial contraints of the installation. Do not attempt to correct these minor problems by changing the configuration of the projector. The default menu settings are already optimized to minimize the impact of these constraints.)
[edit] Remote Control
Use the remote control to operate the projector.
| Button | Function | |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Activate the built-in laser pointer. (WARNING: Do not look directly into the beam or point it at people!) |
|
| 11 | Do not use (inactive) | |
| 14 | Display output currently directed to 'Monitor 4' via the video switcher (i.e., DVD, telescope camera, etc.) | |
| 15 | Display output from the computer attached to the VGA cable | |
| 19 | Only use if unable to correct problem using approved troubleshooting (See #Troubleshooting section for details. NOTE: The standard configuration for the projector will work for most purposes, and there should be no need to change its settings via the [Menu] option. Only use this option as a 'last resort', or if authorized by the keyholder in charge. | |
| 20 | Use this button to digitally 'freeze' the image on the screen (useful when displaying output from a telescope camera, prior to slewing the telescope) | |
| 27 | Press once to put the projector in 'stand-by'. Press a second time when prompted to power off the projector. | |
[edit] How-to...
[edit] ...attach a laptop to the projector
- If the projector power is 'on', use the black, AC power rocker switch on the rear of the projector to turn it 'off' before proceeding.
- If the laptop computer is 'on', turn it 'off' before proceeding.
- Uncoil the blue VGA cable that is attached to the projector, and attach its free end to the VGA output of the laptop.
- Start the laptop. If needed, change its screen resolution to 800x600 pixels.
- Using the procedure defined for the laptop, set its display to output to the VGA output.
- Turn on the projector. After warming up, it will search for an appropriate input and find the laptop's VGA output.
(If the video distribution system is operational, the projector may select its signal as the input. If this happens, use the projector's remote control and press the [VGA] button to select the laptop's display.)
[edit] ...power-up the projector
- Remove the protective dust cover from the projector.
- Slide open the lens cover on the front of the projector.
- If needed, plug the projector's power cord into the AC outlet on the wall below the projector.
- Turn on the power to the projector using the rocker switch just above the AC socket on the rear of the projector. Wait a few moments while the project warms up.
[edit] ...play a DVD through the projector
- The video distribution system must be operational to project a DVD -- follow the start-up instructions found in the Video Distribution document.
- Apply power to the DVD player located on Baby Bear Shelf #2 and load the desired DVD.
- Follow the How to...power up the projector instructions in this document.
- Using the video distribution systems's controller keyboard, select camera #16 and monitor #3. (Key sequence: [Camera] [16] [Monitor] [3] [Enter])
- If the DVD is not displayed on the screen, use the projector remote control and press the [Composite] button to select the appropriate input.
- If there is no sound, check the two wall-mounted monitors -- both must be powered for the sound to work. Set the both monitor's volume controls to the desired level.
[edit] ...power-down the projector
- Using the projector remote, press the [Power] button once.
- Wait for a red instruction box to appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the projected image.
- When the instruction box appears, press the remote's [Power] button once again.
- The projector will being its power-down sequence. Wait until the projector's fan stops operating before continuing.
- Once the projector's fan stops operating, turn the projector's main power switch off. (The switch is the black rocker switch just above the AC power connector on the rear of the projector.)
- Slide closed the lens cover on the front of the projector.
- Carefully replace the dust cover on the projector, taking care to avoid bumping the projector's mount out of alignment.
- Unplug the projector's AC cord from the wall outlet and coil it.
- If you used the attached VGA cable, unattach it from the computer and coil it.
- Store the projector's remote on top of the DVD player, located on Baby Bear Shelf #2.
[edit] Troubleshooting
| Slight 'bleeding' of computer display into screen margins; Various 'keystoning' effects
| When projecting laptop output the image may slightly 'bleed' into the black border of the screen, and various 'keystoning' effects may be noted. These result from the phycial contraints of the installation. Do not attempt to correct these minor problems by changing the configuration of the projector. The default menu settings are already optimized to minimize the impact of these constraints.
|
| Projected computer display doesn't fit on screen
| Your computer must be configured with a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. The projector input must be set to 'VGA' and it's display mode set to 'native'. (Note, when properly working, the computer display will not fit precisely within the boundaries of thie screen. This troubleshooting item refers to gross mismatch in size.)
|
| No sound when playing a DVD
| Ensure both wall-mounted monitor are powered-on and their volume controls set to the desired volume.
