[edit] Purpose

Public events at the Onan Observatory are held regardless of sky or weather conditions with the exception of severe weather. This policy outlines the conditions under which the severe weather policy is applied and the process to implement it.

[edit] Policy

All scheduled or in-progress public events at the Onan Observatory are automatically canceled whenever the National Weather Service announces a severe weather watch or warning for Carver or McLeod counties effective anytime during the scheduled duration of the event.

No exceptions are allowed to this policy--keyolders cannot choose to ignore this policy at their own discretion.

[edit] Procedure

  1. Anytime a severe weather watch or warning is announced by the National Weather Service for Carver or McLeod counties, all affected public activities planned or in-progress during the watch or warning period are immediately canceled.
  2. If the NWS announces the watch or warning while a public event is underway the keyholder in charge of the event must make an announcement to all attendees. All attendees must exit the observatory and the building must be closed for the duration of the watch or warning.
  3. If the NWS announcements takes place before the start of a public event all keyholder volunteers for the event are relieved of those duties and not required to travel to the observatory.
  4. Cancellations may or may not be communicated through the normal MAS channels such as the web site home page, web-based forums or the MAS info telephone message. Individuals planning on attending the scheduled event are responsible for monitoring weather forecast for the duration of the event and applying this policy as needed.
