SUMMARY:ELO Public Star Party
DESCRIPTION:7:00 PM Featured Speaker: Laura Hammerbeck\nTopic: Novae\, supernovae\, kilonovae\, oh my! \nStellar explosions are among the most energetic events in the universe. They create new elements\, enrich interstellar space\, and even lead to the formation of new stars and planets\, but how do you tell them apart? Join NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador Laura Hammerbeck on an exploration of the explosive lives of stars. Exploding stars are in the news! T. Coronae Borealis\, predicted to erupt soon\, is a once-in-a-lifetime event. It’s a recurrent nova\, and people around the world will be able to see it themselves. Why does this happen\, and when? Where should you look? \nExplosions in space…what could be more fun? \n  \nDuring a Public Star Party\, we use our array of telescope platforms to show you the wonders of the night sky. Our primary goal during a star party is to view stars\, star clusters\, galaxies\, nebula\, planets and maybe a comet or two\, all observable through our telescopes. There may also be a presentation or Q&A session at a public event. Public star parties typically run from 7:00-10:00 pm\, although we tend to stay later during the summer months as the summer sunset is later. SUMMARY:Messier Marathon 2026 - OFF FRIDAY
DESCRIPTION:MESSIER MARATHON\nThe MM is called OFF for Friday due to cloudy conditions.  See the Forum or website for backup of Saturday. \nA Messier Marathon is an attempt to find as many Messier objects as possible during one night. The Messier catalogue was compiled by French astronomer Charles Messier during the late 18th century and consists of 110 relatively bright deep sky objects (galaxies\, nebulae\, and star clusters). \nThe first MAS Messier Marathon was held on March 13\, 1999 (Apr Gemini\, pg 4)\, and has been held annually at the Cherry Grove Observatory. The marathon is scheduled for the new moon weekend nearest the spring equinox with Saturday being the primary night\, and Friday being the backup night. \nAs with all Cherry Grove events\, the marathon is held only if the skies are clear and will be CANCELLED IF CLOUDY. See the MAS home page or Forum for the latest information regarding the star party status.

SUMMARY:2025 Mini Messier Marathon
DESCRIPTION:MAS MINI MESSIER MARATHON\nA Messier Marathon is an attempt to find as many Messier objects as possible during one night.

SUMMARY:ELO Public Star Party - Featured Speaker: Tanya Melnik
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Speaker: Tanya Melnik\nTitle: Aurora Chasing\nSummary: Northern lights\, also known as aurora borealis\, are a natural light display many of us had a chance to enjoy in the past couple of years or even earlier. It is one of the most recognized space weather phenomena created from the interaction of solar wind with Earth’s magnetic field. \nOur Sun is currently very active. We are just past solar maximum\, but there are still plenty of opportunities to see aurora in the next couple of years. \nLearn the science of aurora and aurora forecasts. Become a citizen scientist and contribute to the scientific understanding of aurora. And\, of course\, find out how to improve your chance of seeing aurora. \nDuring a Public Star Party\, we use our array of telescope platforms to show you the wonders of the night sky. SUMMARY:2025 ELO Public Star Party - Featured Speaker: Doug Neverman
DESCRIPTION:7:00 PM Featured Speaker: Doug Neverman\nTitle: Observing 101\nSummary: Observing the universe involves more than getting out the telescope. It requires some planning. Observing 101 covers why planning is needed\, terms that are used\, some easy ways to plan targets\, and what to expect when looking through the telescope. When complete the listener will be ready to plan an observing session and know what to expect. \nDuring a Public Star Party\, we use our array of telescope platforms to show you the wonders of the night sky. Note that the Park is open daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. The main gate to the park entrance automatically closes at 10:00 pm\, so please plan to arrive before then. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Public Star Parties are typically all-weather events. SUMMARY:2025 Messier Marathon - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:MESSIER MARATHON\nUnfortunately\, weather forecasts do not look favorable\, so this event is being CANCELLED.\nA Messier Marathon is an attempt to find as many Messier objects as possible during one night.
