MAS Happenings – August 12 2025

Happenings this Week

I was scanning weather forecasts for the astronomy-adjacent hype that meteorologists love to sprinkle in —just in case I’m cornered at an upcoming get-together with non-astronomer friends. (You just know someone’s going to say “Did you see the Crayfish Moon last night?” and I want to be ready.)

In the midst of this I came across one of those attention-grabbing videos about 3I/ATLAS—which I had totally forgotten about. I remember Oumuamua as if it had never left the solar system. That weird, breadstick-shaped monolith with its surprising acceleration (which I still desperately hope/believe to be an alien probe), named in Hawaiian: “a messenger from afar arriving first.”

But 2I/Borisov… huh. I must have missed that one? And now 3I/ATLAS…oops.

So, in the spirit of Oumuamua, I’m launching an unofficial naming contest to rebrand this current interstellar visitor so that it really leaves an impression.

Here are my own entries so far:

InnkomumaðrMjólkurvegar (Old Norse for “the one who has come in along the milk-road”)
Al-Qādimminaṭ-Ṭawqi‘āl-Majarrah (Arabic for “the ancient one from the curve of the galaxy”)
Zhōngxīnquēxíngguānguǎnláng (Mandarin-ish for “radiant wolf from the galactic center”)
Antaryātrikavigrahasūcana (Sanskrit-Hindi for “a sign in form from the inner journeyer”)
Xhālxinārāhvansēltāmē (Elvish for “he who drifts beyond known winds”)
If you’d like to submit your own or vote for a favorite, email the secretary inbox with your pick!

And now, here’s what’s Happening this week:

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC)
Member Observing Weekend

Friday, August 15 6:00 PM – Sunday, August 17 10:00 AM CT
This is yet another opportunity to visit LLCC. The skies are darker up there. Don’t miss out!

Our relationship with LLCC is unique, and these observing weekends are only available to members. Here are a few guidelines:

– Check the LLCC Discussion on the MAS Forum for event details and to register your attendance
– Indicate whether you will need lodging
– This is not an all-weather event and may be cancelled if cloudy

LLCC Observing Weekend
Eagle Lake Observatory (ELO)
Public Star Party

Saturday, August 16
7:00 – 10:00 PM CT

Featured Speaker: Brad Nasset, Solar System Ambassador

Brad’s topic will be: Understanding the Night Sky

There will also be Keyholder Training.

ELO has an array of telescopes to show you the night sky including stars, star clusters, galaxies, nebula, planets, and other objects depending on what is up that night.

Also, this is an all-weather event. Even if cloudy, someone will be there to entertain you on our favorite topic – astronomy!

Become a MAS Presenter!

We would like to enhance our monthly meetings and encourage our members to share your work and passion. Put together a 10–15-minute presentation about the astronomy topic that interests you (and quite probably the rest of the MAS).

Topics include – but are not limited to:

* Observing campaigns
* Astronomical objects
* History topics
* Adventures to dark skies and astronomical sites around the world
* ATM projects – show & tell
* Restoration projects
* Outreach projects
* Observing or Imaging techniques
* Research topics
* Software and telescope how-tos
* Manned or robotic space missions
* And even ‘Better Know a Constellation’!
The presentation is best done live at the meeting but can be done through Zoom if you are joining remotely. If you have something to share, please send an email to the Programs Coordinator Ahmed Reda at programs@mnastro.org
