MAS Happenings – July 29 2025

by | Jul 29, 2025 | MAS Happenings

Happenings this Week

The ELO Committee is keeping a tight lid on the celebrity lineup for this year’s Camping with the Stars. It’s not for lack of trying that this Happenings correspondent doesn’t (yet) have the inside scoop.

With nothing but gut instinct to go on (and I may or may not have once worked the Hollywood beat), I’m going to guess that the newly announced cast of the upcoming Harry Potter remake will be on hand—and that ELO volunteers will be dressed as wizards. (Who, in the HP universe, do have more advanced astronomical knowledge than Muggles, it’s worth noting.)

Come to think of it, as a side note, recruiting our own Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor might be advisable, given the rising popularity of astrophotography within MAS.

I leave it to you, dear readers, to register for CWTS (if you haven’t already) to find out exactly which stars you’ll be camping with.

And now, in addition to you questioning the predictive accuracy of this week’s reporting…Eventia Revelare!

Here’s what’s (for sure) Happening this week:

  • Camping with the Stars at ELO
  • BSIG
  • Cedar Creek
  • LLCC Observing Weekend
  • Submit your astrophotography images for the August meeting – last chance!
18th Annual Camping with the Stars
Eagle Lake Observatory (ELO)

Friday, August 1 @ 7 PM CT – Saturday, August 3 @ 2PM CT

The MAS would like to invite you to attend the Annual Camping with the Stars at the Eagle Lake Observatory in Baylor Regional Park. Speakers are scheduled throughout the day and will give talks on astronomy and what there is to see. Door prize and raffle prize drawings will be held Saturday evening and include telescopes, binoculars, MAS merchandise, astronomy books and more. Weather permitting, the evening will conclude with a tour of the night sky and of course stargazing.

Visit our page on the main website for full information and to register:

Camping with the Stars 2025
Saturday, August 2
7:30 – 11:00 PM CT

Public Star Party at Cedar Creek
Each star party starts with a brief astronomy presentation. A number of telescopes will be available for night sky viewing after the program. You do not need a telescope to attend, and the cost is free.

This is a weather-dependent event, and more information will be posted on the link below.

Cedar Creek Star Party
BSIG Beginner Astronomy
Outdoor Observing Session

Saturday, August 2
7:30 – 11:00 PM CT

The MAS invites everyone to the next Beginners Special Interest Group (BSIG) event at Metcalf Field.

There is no charge to attend, and you do not need to be an MAS member. Everyone is welcome, including children.  The purpose is to help beginners learn the night sky, and to learn how to set up and use a telescope. Bringing a telescope is optional, but if you have one, bring it. Volunteers from the MAS will be on hand to answer your questions and show you objects through their own telescopes, or to assist you with your scope if you’re still learning to use it.

This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if cloudy. It may also be moved to Friday if that forecast is more favorable.

More information on this event can be found here:
