MAS Happenings – September 16 2025

by | Sep 16, 2025 | MAS Happenings

Happenings this Week

I’ve been reading (and re-reading) The Expanse series—highly recommended if you like smart, gritty sci-fi. (The TV show holds up, too.) Since it was my birthday yesterday, I decided to calculate my age on various solar system worlds—ones the series characters inhabit. On Mars, I’d be a spry 29. On Ganymede, barely 4. You can reverse-engineer my Earth age from there. In asteroid belt years, depending on the rock, I’d be an angsty adolescent or full-on teen. So, I decided to rewrite this week’s Happenings from the perspective of a moody Belter kid with a chip on her shoulder toward us “inner planet types.”

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Look alive, inners. This week full wit stargazin’ all over da spin. Big sky party up north where da air clean an’ dark—hope your buggy Earth legs can handle da woods. Down south, a fancy one for folks wit creds who tink dey too good for da light pollution. Den your big “Statewide Star Party”… bring da crowds, bring da scopes, maybe even bring da snacks. New greenhats gettin’ da teachin’, learnin’ not to look down da bizness end o’ da scope. Bring your optics, drop da egos. Sky don’t care if you from Earth or Ceres–it just shine bonito for anyone who look. Voilà.

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC)
Member Observing Weekend
Friday, September 19 6:00 PM – Sunday, September 21 10:00 AM CT
This is yet another opportunity to visit LLCC. The skies are darker up there. Don’t miss out!

This observing weekend will coincide with the Statewide Star Party. Click here for more information: Statewide Star Party | LLCC SITE

Our relationship with LLCC is unique, and these observing weekends are only available to members. Here are a few guidelines:

– Check the LLCC Discussion on the MAS Forum for event details and to register your attendance
– Indicate whether you will need lodging
– This is not an all-weather event and may be cancelled if cloudy

LLCC Observing Weekend
Cherry Grove Observatory (CGO)
Member Star Party

Friday, September 19
7:00 – 11:30 PM CT

Join us at CGO for a Star Party!  Bring your telescope or use one on-site, including the Starmaster Dobsonian, LX-200, or other scopes!

Not a Keyholder at CGO?  Keyholder training will be held during this star party.

Star parties are cancelled if cloudy, so watch here or on the CGO Forum.

Cherry Grove Star Parties are held on Friday nights with Saturday night backups if cloudy. Official dates are listed on the calendar and are usually the first or second weekend of the month. Others are non-official Instant Star Parties (ISP’s) listed by individual members on the forums or Slack.

CGO Member Star Party
Eagle Lake Observatory (ELO)
Statewide Public Star Party
Saturday, September 20

7:00 – 10:00 PM CT

ELO has an array of telescopes to show you the night sky including stars, star clusters, galaxies, nebula, planets, and other objects depending on what is up that night.

This star party is part of a larger statewide star party. Laura Hammerbeck will be the featured speaker on the topic: “The Northern Lights.”

Also, this is an all-weather event. Even if cloudy, someone will be there to entertain you on our favorite topic – astronomy!

ELO Statewide Public Star Party
Save the Date!
New Member Orientation

Rebecca Messer will be conducting this as an in-person only meeting. Here are the details:

Saturday, October 4
10:30 AM – 12 Noon

Ramsey County Library – Maplewood

This meeting will introduce the leadership of the MAS, discuss public and member star parties, provide a look at all our observing sites, discuss all the means of communications within the Society, and provide an overall description of all the benefits of membership in the MAS.

Rebecca looks forward to seeing you there!

Objects in the Heavens Book
Group Purchase

Steve Emert, our Membership Coordinator, is planning a group purchase of the observing reference book, “Objects in the Heavens” by Peter Birren.  This book is normally sold direct for $29.95 plus $7.50 postage, or $37.45.  The individual price is $25.00 shipping included, in the group purchase.

This book is in its 7th edition (Steve has the v5.2 version).  It’s a spiral bound field book that with illustrated constellations depicting objects down to 10th magnitude.

In addition to general reference material (major stars, double stars, red supergiant stars and carbon stars lists, Messier catalog including suggested Messier Marathon search order, NGC catalog with cross reference to other catalogs, a Moon map and viewing guide by day, etc.), the major attraction is it shows an illustration of each constellation in alphabetical order together with a listing of the objects within it.  Brighter “eye candy” objects are bolded for ease of selection, and each object has a short description as well as its RA/Dec coordinates.

It’s excellent if you want to just go out, pick out a constellation and quickly find the DSOs within it.  Each constellation also has a cross reference to the corresponding Sky & Telescope Pocket Sky Atlas page.  It works both as a standalone reference and as a selection guide to objects to use with your smartphone planetarium program.

For a closer look, the web site is:  www.birrendesign.com/astro.html

The group purchase is being advertised on the MAS Discussion Forums under the “MAS Electronic Media & Book Group” topic.  Reply to the message thread to reserve a copy.  Steve plans a deadline for signing up around the end of September or possibly into the first week of October.

Become a MAS Presenter!

We would like to enhance our monthly meetings and encourage our members to share your work and passion. Put together a 10–15-minute presentation about the astronomy topic that interests you (and quite probably the rest of the MAS).

Topics include – but are not limited to:

* Observing campaigns
* Astronomical objects
* History topics
* Adventures to dark skies and astronomical sites around the world
* ATM projects – show & tell
* Restoration projects
* Outreach projects
* Observing or Imaging techniques
* Research topics
* Software and telescope how-tos
* Manned or robotic space missions
* And even ‘Better Know a Constellation’!
The presentation is best done live at the meeting but can be done through Zoom if you are joining remotely. If you have something to share, please send an email to the Programs Coordinator Ahmed Reda at programs@mnastro.org
