MAS Happenings – September 23 2025

by | Sep 23, 2025 | MAS Happenings

Happenings this Week

Welcome to the Dark Side!

And no, I don’t mean that Happenings readers have ALL become imagers. I mean the actual dark side of the year.

The autumnal equinox was yesterday, and that means the Sun has finally gotten our collective memo to hightail it out of the northern hemisphere. Darkness continues to fall earlier with every passing day. In just a few short months, you’ll be able to “get out there and observe” (as Jerry would say) by dinner time—even by Midwestern dinner time, like 5 PM.

So, grab your sweaters (okay, wait until this 80-degree stuff passes) and type “Pumpkin Spice Nebula” into your SkySafari search. It’s time for us to celebrate the loss of daylight!

Here is what’s Happening darkness-wise…

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC)
Member Observing Weekend
Friday, September 26 6:00 PM – Sunday, September 28 10:00 AM CT
This is yet another opportunity to visit LLCC. The skies are darker up there. Don’t miss out!

Our relationship with LLCC is unique, and these observing weekends are only available to members. Here are a few guidelines:

– Check the LLCC Discussion on the MAS Forum for event details and to register your attendance
– Indicate whether you will need lodging
– This is not an all-weather event and may be cancelled if cloudy

LLCC Observing Weekend
Public Star Party at Cedar Creek
Saturday, September 27
2:00 – 4:00 PM CT (solar)
7:00 – 11:00 PM CT (star party)
A number of telescopes will be available for solar observing during the day and later for night sky viewing after the program. Each star party starts with a brief astronomy presentation. You do not need a telescope to attend, and the cost is free.

This is a rain or shine event.

Objects in the Heavens Book
Group Purchase

Steve Emert, our Membership Coordinator, is planning a group purchase of the observing reference book, “Objects in the Heavens” by Peter Birren.  This book is normally sold direct for $29.95 plus $7.50 postage, or $37.45.  The individual price is $25.00 shipping included, in the group purchase.

This book is in its 7th edition (Steve has the v5.2 version).  It’s a spiral bound field book that with illustrated constellations depicting objects down to 10th magnitude.

In addition to general reference material (major stars, double stars, red supergiant stars and carbon stars lists, Messier catalog including suggested Messier Marathon search order, NGC catalog with cross reference to other catalogs, a Moon map and viewing guide by day, etc.), the major attraction is it shows an illustration of each constellation in alphabetical order together with a listing of the objects within it.  Brighter “eye candy” objects are bolded for ease of selection, and each object has a short description as well as its RA/Dec coordinates.

It’s excellent if you want to just go out, pick out a constellation and quickly find the DSOs within it.  Each constellation also has a cross reference to the corresponding Sky & Telescope Pocket Sky Atlas page.  It works both as a standalone reference and as a selection guide to objects to use with your smartphone planetarium program.

For a closer look, the web site is:  www.birrendesign.com/astro.html

The group purchase is being advertised on the MAS Discussion Forums under the “MAS Electronic Media & Book Group” topic.  Reply to the message thread to reserve a copy.  Offer is extended through October 6.

Important Outreach Announcement

From David Schaaf…
Everyone: WE NEED AS MANY TELESCOPES AS WE CAN GET FOR THIS ONE!

The MN Landscape Arboretum is hosting their next Full Moon hike on October 5 from 6:30-9:30 PM. This is an extremely popular event.Tickets are limited to 500 and the event has sold out the last two years. They all converge at our observing site about 30 minutes after the event begins. In previous years we’ve had long lines at the telescopes. The more telescopes we can bring, the better.

Although the event is focused on the full moon, Saturn will be well placed right below it. If you enjoy showing Saturn to those who have never seen it before, this is a perfect opportunity. There will be many families with children.

The Arboretum is located on the same side of the Twin Cities as Eagle Lake Observatory. This is a perfect audience with which to share our public programs at ELO. Previous years have seen a swelling in attendance at ELO star parties following the Arboretum’s October Full Moon Hike.

Please reply directly to David Schaaf at dschaaf@gmail.com with your name and email address so he can send you event information and a gate ticket. Everyone who volunteers gets a free admission ticket to the MN Landscape Arboretum. Autumn is a great time to explore the place. Make a day out of it and check out the Arboretum’s fantastic scarecrow and pumpkin displays

Become a MAS Presenter!

We would like to enhance our monthly meetings and encourage our members to share your work and passion. Put together a 10–15-minute presentation about the astronomy topic that interests you (and quite probably the rest of the MAS).

Topics include – but are not limited to:

* Observing campaigns
* Astronomical objects
* History topics
* Adventures to dark skies and astronomical sites around the world
* ATM projects – show & tell
* Restoration projects
* Outreach projects
* Observing or Imaging techniques
* Research topics
* Software and telescope how-tos
* Manned or robotic space missions
* And even ‘Better Know a Constellation’!
The presentation is best done live at the meeting but can be done through Zoom if you are joining remotely. If you have something to share, please send an email to the Programs Coordinator Ahmed Reda at programs@mnastro.org
