MAS  Events

To the uninformed, astronomy might be dismissed as simply ''looking through a telescope at the stars''.  Amateur astronomers know that nothing could be further from the truth.  There are more avenues astronomical exploration and participation than can be enjoyed in a lifetime!

The diversity of MAS-sponsored events is testament to this variety.  There is literally something for everyone whether novices considering their first telescope purchase or advanced amateurs pursuing scientific research purely for the joy of discovery and contribution.

2012  Onan  Special  Events

This year we have two "Special Events" planned at the Onan Observatory. On Sunday May 20th there will be a Annular Eclipse of the Sun visible across the Pacific and in the southwest US. For us in Minnesota, the eclipse will only be partial and it will still be in progress at sunset, which could make for a great photo opportunity.

For the Partial Solar Eclipse, we will open the observatory at 7:00 pm (the eclipse will start at about 7:20). From Minnesota, the eclipse will end at sunset, but we will continue the star party until after dark.

THE event of the year, if not the century, will be the Transit of Venus on Tuesday June 5th. This is a "Last in our Lifetime" event that will next happen in December of 2117.

We will open the observatory at 4:00 pm the day of the Venus Transit. The transit will begin shortly after 5:00 pm and, as with the Solar Eclipse in May, will end for us in Minnesota at sunset.
